Five Questions to Ask Before Adopting a Labradoodle

So you have decided to add a labradoodle to your family? Congratulations! We are very excited for you to take this next step in your life. Before you adopt, there are a few questions that you should ask yourself before bringing your new labradoodle home.

Can I afford the financial aspects of a dog?

Dogs are not cheap. Your adoption fee is just the beginning of the financial implications of dog ownership. You will need to purchase food and toys, pay for medical bills and buy new accessories, like as collars, leashes or a dog bed. Before adopting a new pet, you should be sure that you’re financially prepared to manage any of these costs.

You will also need to be prepared for any emergency medical bills. If not properly supervised, any dog can get into something and have to go to the animal emergency room – and those visits are costly! Many owners choose to enroll their pups in a health insurance program for animals, and many veterinarians participate and accept coverage from these national providers. Check with your insurance company to see if they offer any coverage programs, or ask your vet for a recommendation.

Labradoodle PuppiesDo I have the time for a dog?

Owning a dog is a large time commitment, as well. Unlike cats, which are more independent, dogs need more attention and care. Your dog will need to be taken out several times a day for walks and bathroom breaks, and you’ll need to make sure you have time in your day to play with him or her. You’ll also need to dedicate time to training your dog. After working a 40-hour week, you may not feel like you have the energy to keep up with your dog, but it’s important to remember that they rely on you to take care of their needs and you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared.

Some pet owners also choose to enroll their pups in a doggy daycare, which is another good option to keep your new dog engaged and active when you can’t be at home. Even if you only take your labradoodle once or twice a week, it can provide a break from staying home all day and give them an opportunity to play and socialize with other dogs. However, this is another cost, so if it’s something you’re considering, make sure that you factor it in when you are budgeting for dog ownership.

Do I have the time and space to exercise my dog?

This question goes hand in hand with the previous question. Your dog will need to be exercised regularly. Your dog will probably sit at home all day, which means when you get home they’ll want nothing more than to spend some time going for a walk or playing outside in the lawn. To keep your dog’s mind and body healthy and active, you will need to make sure that they have play time, and you’ll need to find time in your schedule to allow for this.

What about dog grooming?

Labradoodles required more grooming because they are low shedding dogs. This means that they can easily build up dirt and hair, which if left unattended could result in a matted coat. You’ll need to make sure to groom your pup or schedule an appointment with a groomer regularly. While it’s nothing strenuous to do – and many pups love to be bathed or combed – you’ll need to make sure to remember to make an appointment or break out the dog shampoo and brush. Don’t forget that you’ll need to keep your dog’s nails trimmed and clean their ears regularly, too.

Is my home prepared for a dog?

Will you have enough space for a puppy to run and play? Do you have hazards that could pose a problem for a playful pup? While labradoodles are not known to be high-energy dogs, they are medium-sized, so a small studio apartment may not be the best spot for them. They’ll need at least a bit of room to roam and play, so consider whether your living space is enough. You’ll also need to keep any small children’s toys or hazardous plants out of the reach of your puppy so that they don’t end up eating something they shouldn’t and need an emergency vet visit.
