Winter Safety Tips for Your Dog

Winter weather conditions can be harmful to your pup. Cold temperatures, snow, ice, and high winds are just a few elements that you need to keep in mind when trying to care for your dogs during the winter months. To ensure that your dog is safe and warm this winter, check out these tips!

Protect Their Paws

When you’re out walking, be mindful that your dogs can pick up toxic chemicals along the way. To avoid consumption of harmful chemicals while grooming, make sure you are thoroughly cleaning their paws and underbelly. To clean their paws, you should dip them in a bucket of water before entering the house. A hand broom can sweep any snow off your dog’s legs, and a slicker brush can be used to get tougher clumps of snow off the dog’s legs and belly.

Wear Winter Gear

Just like humans, dogs also should be wearing protective layers during the winter months. If you live in an area that usually experiences snowfall, have your dog practice wearing snow boots as a puppy. Boots protect your dog’s paws from drying and cracking. Also, they should always have a reflective jacket on whenever they’re outside. This will keep your dog warm, dry, and visible during the dark winter months.

Monitor Your Dogs Time Outside

Make sure you are checking your local weather for any extreme weather conditions. It’s common for dogs to experience frostbite, especially on their ears and tail. If you notice any white or blue patches on your dogs’ skin, you should get them checked out immediately. Lastly, never leave your dog alone in the car during the winter. Parked vehicles can act as a fridge when they’re not running and leaving your dog unattended is dangerous.

Add Cozy Bedding

Hardwood and tile floors can get very cold throughout the winter. You can add blankets, purchase an elevated bed, or invest in a heated bed. If you have carpeting in your home, you should move their bed to the carpet for an extra layer of insulation.
