When it comes to our dogs, we have all the bases covered. From the waterproof walking jacket to the highest quality puppy chow, what more could we need?

As pet owners, it is easy to forget the importance of dog dental care because it is not a topic that is talked about enough. We usually don’t think about our dog’s oral health until we notice a problem.

Here are a few reasons dog dental care is important and why you should take preventative action before problems arise.

Prevent Bad Breath

If you notice your dog has had some very stinky breath, it could be due to bacteria buildup from poor dental care. Regularly cleaning your dog’s teeth can help prevent that odor from developing. Otherwise, the food particles that cling to their teeth and gums will form plaque.

Avoid Gingivitis

When tartar is left on your dog’s teeth, it can cause inflammation and gum infection. The gums may begin to recede from the teeth, leaving the teeth and gums more vulnerable. This can lead to gingivitis, which can cause your dog to lose their teeth. Gingivitis is the first phase of gum disease which can develop into a more dangerous periodontal disease.

Prevent Organ Damage

The bacteria that reside within plaque can enter the bloodstream. Once it travels through the body, bacteria can spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys. This process is called bacteremia. Bacteremia can cause organ damage and make your dog sick.

How to Prevent Dog Dental Issues

The medical issues listed above can be easily avoided by practicing safe dental care for your dog. The best way to do this is to brush their teeth regularly. You can have your pup’s teeth professionally cleaned at a veterinarian’s office, but regular at-home dental care is also recommended. For effective canine teeth brushing, you’ll need a toothbrush designed for a dog—either a brush that fits over your finger or a long-angled dog toothbrush. Make sure you get a toothpaste specifically for dogs that your vet approves.

The best time to start forming a dental care routine is when your furry friend is a puppy. If you are considering adopting a puppy soon, Copper Canyon Labradoodles has expected Labradoodle litters due in February 2022. You can fill out an online puppy adoption application to take the first step in finding your perfect pup.

Remember to add tooth brushing into your puppy care routine so your dog can stay happy and healthy for many years to come.
